Guest Talk by Abbas Sajjad, Head Marketing and Sales – Atlas Asset Management

Leaders are not self appointed but chosen- with that said, Abbas Sajid ,the Head of Marketing Sales & Investor Services at Atlas Asset Management Limited, caught the attention of the students of Leadership class in IoBM, while giving a guest speaker session about Transformational Leadership. With an experience of working with Atlas group for a while he spoke of his transformational leadership experiences. He said every man has a natural instinct of being a leader. But if he is high on the Emotional Quotient, he might have to ignore the idea because it’s a stressful job. Losing his emotions on the wrong day might be costly for him and the team.

HE spoke of how a leader needs to always be selfless. He needs to have a broader view beyond his own personal preferences and projections. HE should look at the bigger picture to see what is best for the whole of organization.  His focus should be on the value of Equality. Every team member should get the same amount of support and preference from the leader so none feel he is biased. He should be rational and logical. He always is to take the blame for the team for any failures and give the credit for the achievements of the team. He needs to act beyond his own self.

But why does a leader have to transform? For the organization, of course. He has to transform, to transform his followers which consequently transform the organization.  . And the ultimate goal of the organization is achieved in an improved manner. Transformation is important because the world is in a constant state of change. And if the organizations aren’t responsive, they shall lag behind. Some might fail in the course too, but some may succeed depending upon the traits of the leader.

Mr. Abbas stressed on the use of 3Rs I.e. Respect, Reward & Recognition. Basic values and morals are absolutely necessary. But for a follower, the 3R is what he is focused on.  Is he actually getting something in return from the leader, for what he is offering him? It’s the leader’s responsibility to make more with less. He has to align the limited amount of resources with the vision of the organization. He needs to be highly visionary to make sure his corporate goals are well achieved.

For a leader, he has to take 100% responsibility for everything.  He should develop a conducive environment where the employees feel they can be autonomous in what they do which consequently gives a boom to innovation in the organization.  Cross Functional departments should be promoted by leaders so every department knows how everything works. Integration is the key.

A leader should be humble to assure success. According to Mr. Abbas Sajid, Braggers get nowhere! Humility helps in improving employee confidence.

Quoting the example of HBL, a bank known for a good management and hence it flourishes, he said the leaders should be able to transform the mindset of the people that whatever they do will impact the bigger picture. What they do is important and they themselves are an important tool for the organizations survival. This is to embed a sense of responsibility within them and they will do their work in the right meaning.

    Leaders are not self-appointed, they are chosen. They inspire to become leader. They lead and inspire because of who they are and how they interact with others.
    Leader has projection and feeling what he wants to do but leadership can’t work in isolation. Leaders cannot lead without followers. To become leader, you have to be very rational throughout. Emotional Quotient should be very high for Leadership, the ability to be wisely in tune with yourself and your emotions, as well as having sound situational awareness is a powerful tool for leading a team. The act of knowing, understanding, and responding to emotions, overcoming stress in the moment, and being aware of how your words and actions affect others.

    When technology related problem or any other problem appears than you should know that there is a need for change. In some companies, transformation comes into disaster because of poor leadership. Leader has to be interactive, psychologically taking people along in long run. Implementation of SAP is due to change in mindset & technology. It is about empowering employees and allowing them to use their unique talents and insights to make your organization an even better place to work and an even better place to do business. People don’t want to work with company if something bad happened with their colleagues, co-workers and friends in the same company. Three R’s are very important; Respect, Reward & Recognition either its CEO, Dean, General Manager, Sales person – at every level or at every position these three R’s are very important and effective to lead team. Leader is the one who can take 100% responsibility and 360 degree paradigm shift. Leaders guide their employees and let them shine.

    Humility is key to effective leadership & high performance. It is the humility to admit that only your way isn’t the only way or even that some people are better at certain roles than you. The humble leader accepts these truths and allow other’s strengths to work for the good of the team or organization without interference. Humility makes a best leader, otherwise it would backfire eventually. If you are going to introduce new technology, then it’s very important to transform the mind of people to realize the importance of that new technology. Leaders should frame the vision for next three to five years.

      Mr abbas gave an extremely inspirational and learning session on transformational leadership. He spoke about many aspects of transformational leadership along with examples of
      His own career to further elaborate his points. He mentioned that when a person is a leader he has to think very selflessly and with an open mind. He has to be logical and raional and not let his emotions come in between his decisions. A person has to come out of himself when he is a leader, he/she cannot simply put themselves first as their followers come first, their organization comes first, for example, a leader cannot take a paid leave whenever he wants, he has to assure wether the organization is in a stable state or not before deciding to use his paid leave. This might be difficult as it is obviously not easy to transform especially in big organizations but it has to be done. Without this transformation a leader cannot succeed. The need to transform may arise because of a number of reasons;these being a leader has to be likeable, open minded, interactive, concerned, responsible, etc. eventhough it puts alot of stress on the leader they have to change themselves for the sake of the organization and themselves. It is not an easy thing that is said and just done like that. Other types of transformations include merger, takeover, joint venture, corporate transformations of the company which require alot of professional traits as well technical, human and conceptual skills in a leader. This is the time when a organization needs a leader to step forward and take initiative.

      Then Mr. Abbas spoke about the 3 R’s;respect, reward and recognition. Every person in an organization needs to be respected, wether that’s a pune or a high level executive. Every individual also expects a reward for the work done this reward can be verbal appreciation and monetary rewards. Rewards further motivate followers and boosts their self esteem. This drives them to work harder and achiever greater outputs of work.

      A leader also has to be tough, just liniently does not work. He/she has to show that they have some command over the work being done. They have to act as a role model, as an inspiration and they have to
      Show their followers that their voice is being heard in an organization. A leader should have a high emotional intelligance i.e. A high EQ. A person with soft emotions cannot be a leader. The five traits of emotional intelligence are: self awarness, self regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. Empathy is important because it connects a leader with his co workers if empathy is not present no one
      Will listen to the figurehead. Social skills is the ability to communicate with confidence and purpose. Without this skill how will one spot the talent in their followers?

      According to Mr. Abbas, emotional intelliengence is extremely important in leaders. This trait helps them discover themselves and makes them work accordingly. Mr. Abbas also spoke about experience. Don’t we all require experience to avoid mistakes ‘the next time’? Just like any other person a leader requires experience to deal with difficult situations. Situations in which difficult decisions have to be made. Without this experience a leader will not be able to deal with such situations sensibly.

      Lastly, Mr. Abbas spoke about the vision a leader has. A leader should think differently and should have a vision that that he can work towards and lead the his followers to work towards that vision. Thus, the higher the post a leader holds the harder he has to work and set an example for others to follow.

    Mr. Abbas Sajid, Head of Marketing and Sales at Atlas Asset Management Limited gave a very interesting session on Transformational Leadership. Initially, he started his session by asking what does it take to be a good leader? What would be your drive to become a leader? After getting answers like to bring a change, to stand for a cause and to improve lives of the people a person becomes a leader, he quoted: “Leaders are not self appointed, they are chosen!”
    He further explained that first thing in leadership is to think selflessly. The leader should keep his preferences aside as there is always a history, vision, model or a cause behind as to why a person is leading. He should always focus on his agenda rather than fulfilling his self-interests. Moreover, he enlightened that leadership can’t work in isolation. It is always through system and structure that leadership gets evolve. It is a two way process. Leadership sees everyone with equality.
    Furthermore, he tried to explicate that sometimes leadership within an organization isn’t popular but is popular outside. One of the reasons could be that a leader who transforms isn’t the most popular person for all of his employees in a multicultural organization.
    He emphasized on leading by example. There should be ethics and motivation in the personality of a leader. Also, he mentioned the importance of 3Rs: Respect, Reward and Recognition. He stressed that every CEO should follow the 3Rs in order to be successful. Leadership is tough; therefore, he explained that a person with high EQ isn’t suitable to become a leader as a person with a higher EQ won’t be able to cope up with his emotions. A leader has to be on his toes all the time in order transform his company. He is the one who should take 100% responsibility of everything. In organization if there is any issue and it goes to the leader’s room then at that time he should be able to solve it immediately. That is the 360 paradigm. In leadership visionary and spirituality skills are important. The more experienced you are the better it is. There is no replacement of experience.
    Moreover, he accentuated that it is a must that a leader should have humility. As if a leader is humble with his employees it will be more effective and employees will work in a better way. He further said that success is all about common sense. The facts should be kept on ground and rational thinking should be done in order to achieve desired goals and objectives.
    According to him the best example of transformational leadership in Pakistan is of HBL, a bank that is known for its good management and good leadership qualities.

    Learning is an unique process, a combination not none to many,it has no definition, no set rules. Mr. Abbas Sajid, Head of Sales & Marketing at Atlas Asset Management Limited delivered a session from his vast experience of 25 years with this organization and how he has learnt alot during this period of time where skills are inculcated in a person with each and every situation he faces with the provided situation.

    Books provide us the core knowledge in the shape of theories and concepts, but how they are practically implemented and experienced is a complete different story. Session delivered from Mr. Sajid is a pure example of how things are much more complicated and serious in real life compared to how they are explained in the world of books. His amazing first hand examples from the professional career gave me a clear understanding of how situations are handled by considering a lot more than only the core basis of the theory.

    As session was directed towards transformational leadership, his content was quite useful for me to grasp the understanding about applying these concepts in our local corporate culture along with developing skills of leadership within. His journey had a lot to be conveyed but limited time with him was worth each minute.

    Moreover, his interaction with the class was on an optimum level with clear objective of keeping the audience engaged and get every word delivered by him with clear understanding. His own philosophy of leadership was something to be inspired from – Leaders are not self-appointed, they’re chosen, which in depth is what leadership consist of rather than creating an impression of showcasing one’s leadership skills. His words were quite valuable and were carrying a weight of 25years of professional career he has been through yet. At another point he said “leadership is to think selflessly but towards the vision” which again refers to the core meaning of what a leadership should exactly be like.

    He referred to values of leader is in giving – further he explained them as 3Rs’ “Respect, Reward & Recognition” where he related his talk about how giving these matters will return in a beneficial form to the bigger vision and objective.

    His ending note to the session on transformational leadership was with a question & answer session, where he explained how HBL has transformed and repositioned its image in the local financial sector through transformational leadership.

    The ideas and the knowledge that I receive from the guest speaking session from the Mr. Abbas Sajid sales head in the ATLAS Investment. The session was on the topic Transformational Leadership. So today I am discussing whatever I have learned from the session. Mr. Abbas Sajid has been working for 25 years and he has worked for 4 to 5 companies. Some of the questions he asked which makes us to think directly about the leadership. He asked that what will be your drive to become a leader. And he also asked that what does it entail to be a good leader?
    He has also discussed that that leaders are not that are self appointed they are the one who are chosen. He also adds that leaders are the one who inspire others to become a leader. According to him, there is something in every individual which tell to become a leader, you want yourself at high to feel that feeling of leadership. He tells us that leaders are the one who think selflessly and leader cannot work in the isolation. He gave the example like if we are thinking in the direction that this is my goal and this my vision and I think that I am right and the organization should work in that direction only because I think that this the right way so, If a person is doing like that so he is not a leader. Leader is the one who gives equality; he is the rational and the logical decision maker. Leadership he defines that leadership is an art not a science. There are something which is perceive as different but they are different in actual so leader has to understand. Larger the organization work load will be greater and right person at the right place this is all you need so in this way leadership is not easy it is very painful. According to him not all transformations efforts lead to success sometimes it leads towards disasters. Leadership is very difficult it gives emotional stress, work stress to transform a company. For this a leader has to be open, interactive if he wants the high growth so it is important. Leader has to motivate the people that are working so he should keep the people motivated because people are the resource of the company. It is require from the leader to give respect, recognition and reward to the employees. Leader is the one who takes the responsibility of 100 people in each and everything. According to him more skilled you are the more experience you will be. A person need to be more humble if he wants to be successful in the life. Leader always frame the vision like where we want to take our company in 2 to 3 years. Single person cannot do everything so he keeps himself a team. If people who are not able to bear the stress or he is he is emotionally weak or hi EQ is high so this person cannot become a leader.

    The notion behind what drives towards being a transformational leader lies in the desire to challenge the status quo and bring about a positive change in the organization. It is important because of the fact that organizations face rapid evolutions in their typical life spans. Another concept is related with achieving higher profitability margins which requires every member to be on a same page hence the need to co-align their objectives towards an overall organizational goal comes out as a great challenge.
    Transformational leader should have a sense of humility, determination, fairness, interactiveness and integrity embedded in their norms so that they can lead their entire team along instead of getting rid of them in challenging situations. They should always stick to 3 basic R-principles
    1. Respect
    2. Reward
    3. Recognition
    In short transformational leadership requires framing of organizational overall vision into the mindset of every member such that they realize their roles and responsibilities clearly and are self driven towards executing them.

    According to him, leaders are not self appointed, they are chosen. He further explained the attributes that are required to become a transformational leader: Firstly, a leader has to be self less which means that he/she must forget all his desires and preferences and only focus on the achieving the common goal and strive towards working for the shared purpose; Secondly, in terms of decision making, a leader must be rational and logical. Also, he should be able to follow his instincts especially those which gives him/her the feelings of elation. He further discussed that leadership is an art and not science. It requires both emotional and mental capabilities for success. In addition to this, he described that leadership cannot work in isolation, a leader has to take everyone on board and keep them tied together in order to achieve the goal. He has to create a buy-in as without it a leader cannot do anything.

    He further enlightened us that transformational leadership is a painful process. The person who has acquired the position of a leader is not necessarily very popular as he has to deal with many contrasting views and opinions. He believes that for multinational organizations it’s very difficult to transform as people here belonged to various cultures and backgrounds. Besides this, not all transformational leadership approaches are successful; some have very disastrous endings associated with it as it all requires great emotional and work stress. Mr. Sajid added that transformational leadership can be taken into a broader view from an organizational perspective. All the resources however small they can be aligned with the overall organizational goal of the company.

    Moreover, he emphasized on the 3Rs; Respect, Reward and Recognition. He said that this should be a continuous process of providing respect to everyone, offering them timely reward and recognizing and appreciating the efforts of each employee. Also, he heightened the importance of the fact that a leader has to be very tough which means he should be capable of coping with emotional stresses of his own personal as well as professional life. He thinks that there is no replacement for experience as it enables a leader to deal with different kinds of situation on day to day basis. He highlighted the significance of humility especially for a leader to be effective and successful. Most importantly, he thinks that success is linked with common sense. In response to one of the questions in the session, Mr. Sajid described HBL as one of the organizations that is the prime example of transformational leadership in our country. In the end, he said that transformational leadership occurs when a leader positively impacts on others’ lives.

    According to him transformation is always painful, puts emotional and work stress on people and comes at a very high cost. The pain can range from laying off employees to changing infrastructure to changing regions etc. henceforth it becomes even more crucial that the leader transformation skills are so good that he executes the entire transformation smoothly with the least bit of hiccups. According to him changing the mindset of people is crucial for transformational leadership. He stated the fact when he was in Honda Atlas and they adopted the mechanized method of evaluating people which was ten times better than the manual method however it took some time for people to get accustomed to the new method. He also said that if the current people cannot be changed it becomes necessary to bring in new people which is an even stressful job. Leader has to be tough at times to make sure things go smoothly and great leaders have Respect, Reward and Recognition. For a transformational leader it is important that he takes hundred percent responsibility of everything without blaming other. Great leaders always give credit to others for accomplishments and take the blame on themselves for failures.
    Mr. Abbas made it further clear that leaders should be able to solve any problem associated with the particular field they are pertaining to as leaders and this can only come through experience hence experience is very important for anyone to become a leader. Out of thin year you cannot conjure leaders. Leaders go through a lot which make them aware of every inch of that field and that is the reason they are in the position to actually lead. Furthermore great leaders need to bring everyone and everything together despite the differences associated and they need to bring top management on the same page as them to ensure that everyone follows one common goal. Last but not least for great leaders humility is very necessary and being humble is important.

They think selflessly and always keep vision in front of their eyes. He believed that a leader cannot work in isolation. He needs his followers to follow his footprints and work together with a single thought and vision. It is very important for a leader to make everyone part of a big whole. He has to be rational and logical. Being a leader is not some science but an art. Leader is the one who is not always a very popular person but he is the one who is usually unpopular silent one and simply inspires people.
    Transformational Leader has a very difficult job when it’s time to bring in change as transformation is the most painful and lengthy process. At times transformation is disastrous if the leader is emotionally unstable. Therefore, a leader has to be emotionally sound and stable. Because it is the leader who needs to stand by his people and make them flow in a given direction. A transformational leader is the one who respect, reward and recognize his people and gives courage to face challenges shaping their visions according to that of the organization. They are very skilled and experienced people.
    In a nutshell leaders are the people who are visionaries and inspire others. They are the ones who have ability to take their team forward and work together with them and direct them in a direction. They are the ones who encourage and boost confidence of their employees and above all they are the most empathetic people. They understand and solve their problems in order to help them focus on a single thought that is the ultimate goal of the organization.

    Humility is vital to successful administration and superior performance. The modest pioneer acknowledges these truths and permits other’s qualities to work for the benefit of the group or association without interference in any way. So it’s basically the humbleness that makes a best pioneer, else it would blowback in the long run. If a leader is introducing new technology or is going to present new innovation, then it’s essential to change the brain of individuals to understand the significance of that new innovation.     This is what happened this week when Mr.Abbas Sajjad (sales head Atlas Capital Market) came in for a guest speaker session this Saturday. Abbas Sajjad a man with an immense experience and diverse portfolio, Is a Masters in business administration from LUMS and has a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from UET Lahore.
    Coming to his lecture He said that with his experience he has learned that “leaders are chosen” and “a person who is leading should be self erudite by his history”. He believe sometimes a leader might be popular from outside the organization but might not be that popular in his own work place. He says that transformation is difficult and leader has to face a lot of resistance but a good leader goes through this all. Primarily transformation take place to increase profitability but not all transformation efforts done leads to success there are time when things turns into a disaster but a good leader is someone who take these bitter medicines for the betterment of his organization and followers. To an extend that sometimes he has to take decisions about unpopular mergers/takeovers/acquisitions. People might not like to work at the same place if the change is not liked.

    He will further explaining the features and attributes of a good transformational leader stated that “If a person’s EQ is high he should not become a leader” and if you cannot cope up with the stress you should avoid from becoming a leader, And the leader is one who takes cent percent responsibility and he is there to solve things. A leader should also posses traits such Vision-Spirituality and his thinking level should be at a different paradigm to be an archetype for his followers. He even shared his thoughts on Transactional leaders that they are run of the mill material with nothing extraordinary.
    A leader should not have this “I AM” thing in himself, the day this element comes into his thinking process he should change himself, here even shared example of Pakistani students who have studied from LUMS and Stanford this is a problem with the generally. A leader should be humble and should have his homework done.

    Mr. Abbas Sajjid shared his views on transformational leadership during his talk session and some of the key insights I received were as follow; Mr. Abbas started off the session by asking few students in the class who are currently employed in an organization that what is their main drive of becoming a leader. Some of the answers that came were to bring a change wherever they were working and to help people improve. Mr. Abbas also gave his views saying that leaders are not self-appointed rather they are chosen. All of us aspire to be a leader, but if we look deep down ourselves, it is necessary to have certain leadership qualities. He also said that it is important that we all see ourselves in a high position within the organization. A company’s lifespan causes its business environment to change and that’s the time the role of a leader is of utmost importance. He also stressed the importance for leaders to think very selflessly and his own preferences should not override the organization’s goals. One other important point discussed by him is that leaders cannot work in isolation. It is very important to be rational in decision making. His views on leadership are that it is an art, not a science.
    Transformational leadership according to Mr. Abbas is difficult when a large number of people are there in an organization. Also, leaders sometimes are required to make unpopular and tough decisions. Profitability is the main goal of every organization and if a problem arises in achieving it, then decisions are made to bring in people who can transform changes within the organization. Transformation can also lead to disasters at times for certain organizations. It takes a lot of emotional stress to transform any organization. At times unpopular decisions have to be made. Atlas Honda had a strategy to take people along the tough journey they were in the process of implementing a new software system(SAP). Rather than hiring new employees, the old employees were retained and new mindset was created within the team that you’ll do it. Getting rid of old employees have serious disadvantages like cost, motivation, training, management etc.
    According to Mr. Abbas, leadership requires 3 values which include Reward, Respect, and Recognition. Leaders have to be tough decision makers and a person who is very emotional (High EQ) cannot qualify to become a leader. This is because he is not able to handle his own emotional stress. A leader takes 100% responsibility for everything in the organization. People fail in leadership because they haven’t gone through any onboard experience. Humility is very important in a leader, because the more humble you are, the more successful you are going to be.
    Lastly, he concluded by saying that leaders create an atmosphere of teamwork within an organization where everyone is working towards one common goal.

    He started his talk by asking the audience about what a good leader is and what drives you to be leader? After getting random answers from audience he stated “Leaders are chosen not appointed”. Leader s are to be at the top various organizations have different system in different time periods a person who handles it is a capable of being a leader. Further he said that the people who have I have emotional quotient should not be the leader.
    A leader has different level of responsibilities and he has to take 100% responsibility, he should be able to solve the problem s from all dimensions (360 degree). He further emphasized that, “one stock of pen will back fire”. A proper research and home work should be done for transformation. He concluded that, It is a thing of common sense and experience has no replacement and leader should have healthy relationships with everyone.

The 30 minute session was not only full of knowledge, but showcased how the term “leadership” is different from person to person.
    Background
    Mr. Abbas Sajid has worked for over 25 years at different positions and fields, garnering a repertoire of skills under his belt. The one skill he was adamant, and talked to us about, was leadership, specifically transformational leadership, which was the topic of discussion of our 3rd week’s class.
    The Session
    According to Mr. Abbas Sajid, we all have a desire to become a leader but he is of the opinion that we can’t be a leader ourselves. In fact, to be a leader, people need to appoint you the leader. However, being a transformational leader isn’t as easy as it seems.
    While he did fumble here and there, showing that practice means more than theory, he imparted the fact that not every leader can stay that way for long, owing to it being a very difficult and stressful position.
    According to him, a leader is someone who adheres to the 3 R’s, which he terms as Respect, Recognition and Reward. As we have learned in transformational leadership and the process of framing, it’s not about giving all 3 but prioritizing and choosing which of the 3 to give first, and most. By doing so, you can transform individuals who will, in turn, transform the company or organization for you.
    He also stated that more than anything, a leader needs to be selfless. He needs to act in the best interest of his company and his team. In doing so, he sets a phenomenal example, an idealized one, for his team to follow. In doing so, he ensures that his team performs beyond their own expectations and goes above and beyond.
    When it comes to cross functional teams, he says that things could get tricky. However, it’s vital that a leader knows how such departments work and how they interact, in order to promote harmony and effective interplay.
    During his session, he delved into a great example of how transformational leadership worked for local companies. In one instance, Atlas needed to change but that wasn’t possible until the ‘mindset’ of the people working directly and indirectly for them changed as well. Fortunately, the leader was able to do so and in doing so, was able to help ‘transform’ people and thus, help the company flourish.
    Conclusion
    In the end, he made it evident that everyone wants to be a leader, generally because of the attractive sway it holds. However, he also made it very clear that it’s a difficult task and should not be taken lightly. When it comes to transformational leadership, it seems even more difficult, yet still possible. You need determination, a good control on your emotions, and a dedication for the good of the team and the company you’re working for in order to marginally succeed at being a good transformational leader.

    He started his session by asking a few questions to the class that was:

    Our honorable guest speaker’s prime focus was to make the students understand about applying the leadership concepts in corporate cultures. He shared his diverse experiences which make us understand that books provide us the basic knowledge whereas, implementation and execution are something which can’t be a cup of tea for all. He explained that real life leadership is way more complicated and difficult. The on ground decisions need practice and a lot more experience. A leader has to be the field master in order to direct his/ her employees.

    Furthermore, he emphasized on the statement that leaders are not self-appointed but they’re chosen. The transformational leaders highly believe in teamwork and continuous process. They motivate their employees to give their best at work. The transformational leaders ought to bring a sense of humility, equality, determination and interactiveness with their subordinates/ team.

    Leaders should firmly follow the important principles of R that are:

    3. Recognition

He said we have very few good leaders in Pakistan but now the awareness about leadership importance is growing and that things are gradually changing. He shared about HBL experience and how the company has transformed itself.

    Mr. Abbas continued the session by telling the important qualities about a transformational leader. He said that a leader should have a clear vision and a shared purpose. He is selfless, ethical and the voice of his followers. He cater to each follower separately and act as his mentor. he motivates his followers and take the whole team along. He also focused more on humility and said that humility is one of the most important characteristics of a leader. Since leadership is all about followers, the leader should be humble and have empathy for his followers.

    Mr. Abbas emphasized on the three Rs, which he said are very important for a transformational leader. These includes, respect, reward and recognition. He said that the leader should respect his followers and their needs, he should reward them if they perform well and they should appreciate and give recognition to their followers.

    The guest speaker then shared one his views, which surprised many of us. While we were taught that Emotional Quotient is one of the most important characteristic of a leader, Mr. Abbas said that people with high EQ should not be leaders. He justified his opinion saying that leaders has to solve problems for all his followers. He has to deal with others and so he has to be very strong. If a person is not emotionally strong and cannot solve his own problems, he will not be able to solve problems for others and so he won’t be a right fit.

    The speaker then ended his session sharing few examples of transformational leaders such as Asad Omer and Abdul Manaan Shaikh etc.

    He continued by telling us how leadership is an art and not a science. You cannot learn to be a leader after following some steps or following a process. Leadership is from within.
    The biggest learning we received from Mr. Abbas was that a leader can emerge from anywhere. He can be as small in position as a team member and can be as big as your CEO. The designation or position of the person given by the company does not make him a leader.
    Moreover, our guest speaker informed us that what the leader does the most is transform the mindset. However, he told us that sometimes the transformation can be disastrous. It is not mandatory that a leader be successful in transforming.
    Often, transformation occurs when automation takes place in a system or organization. Such transformation takes place in the form of people getting trained (like on a specific technology).
    Going deeper into leadership, he explained that all types of leadership have 3 aspects, or the 3 R’s. These are, Reward, Respect and Recognize. Hence, we now know that true leaders always care about the people around.
    A true leader HAS to be humble. You cannot become a successful leader if you aren’t humble. The article we read about the Kimberly Clark CEO stated the same, humility being key.
    Lastly, what amazed me the most was when Mr. Abbas told us his opinion that a person with a high Emotional Quotient (EQ) should never become a leader.
    Overall the session by Mr Abbas was pretty amazing where he shared his experience at Atlas and explained everything he said with proper examples from the workplace.

    According to Mr. Sajjid leaders are chosen people and not self appointed. A leader should think selflessly in any given situation.

    Transformation is painful specially for Multi-Cultural companies, He said. However if the profits or technology is reporting negatively, It indicates the need to to transform, He added.

    Further he briefed about his own organization that Initially assembly of the parts were done in Pakistan, This is a complex business that we are doing, Our turnover is now around 45 to 50 Billion Rupees. He added that we follow the philosophy of taking people along.

    Transformation of individuals, automation were two of the biggest challenges they faced i.e Transforming individuals from doing one thing for decades and start all over again is not easy. Respect, reward and recognition are top priorities for our organization.

    Mr. Sajjid also emphasized on people with high EQ should not lead, Even if offered they should decline. According to him a leader should be tough and should be able to endure high amount of daily stress.

    A leader should be a visionary he stated, The more skilled and experienced he/she is the more situation he/she can handle. Further he said that a leader should possess humility and also said that there is nothing equivalent to experience.

    The speaker ended his session with the example of HBL as to how it transformed itself and how its performing currently.

He quoted an example that in technological industry, companies need to innovate with time so leadership has to get people along to bring change.

    He also mentioned the changes with time occur in the business environment in terms of technology, methods of doing operations and standards. So the leaders are the people who bring these changes by getting people along and explain advantages which will attain by accepting the new changes to become successful e.g. different systems used for operations i.e. SAP etc.

    Leaders keep the people motivated and give them resources, authority, decision making power, respect, reward and recognition. Leaders have to be tough at times. With high (EQ) people, they should not become leaders because they decline to lead. Leaders need to be on toes when transform and should take all responsibility.

    The more you skilled, experience and visionary then you can become able to meet challenges which will occur in future. The more you are humble, the more you will be successful. The success is related with common sense. Leaders should not think that they are superior then their followers or employees. Create an environment where all functions and personnel are integrated with each other.

    He gave an example of HBL that it is considered as to have best management. People work or lead on small pockets and transform others. Give freedom to work bounded with vision to achieve.

Major topic of discussion was transformational leadership, so he highlighted the aspects of it. He discussed that transformation is a difficult and painful process and therefore one needs to be steadfast and strong decision maker. Lots of comprises and sacrifices are required for being a leader. Transformational leaders are not always popular because sometimes your decisions are not appreciated but you are required to take them being a leader. Being a transformational leader requires strong emotional intelligence to handle stress. The task of a leader is to transform the mindset of the people so they can transform the organization in result of it. It is the task of leader to join smaller links to the larger vision of the organization. He should be able to solve the puzzle and be able to take responsibility of the issues. He should be able to recognize the expertise of an individual and give him respect, reward and recognition. For being a transformational leader you need to do lot of homework, one must not come in fantasy of word leader, it is a difficult task and lack of homework can backfire. He also stressed about humility that a leader should be down to earth person. The day you think you are amazing is the day you should change your mindset because a leader cannot afford to have such a mindset. He also said that success in leadership is a game of common sense; if a person takes rational decisions in day to day task he will eventually yield better results. He also emphasized on change and adaptation, change is the only constant thing if you do not change it will change you, so leader should align himself with technology. It was a learning experience for me as I came to know about his professional experiences and what he derived for it. The essence of his discussion was that leader is one who is selfless and has a vision. Transformational leader is one who has capability of transforming the mindset of people and motivates them by joining their links with the vision of organization. He should take people along and train them by being an example to them.

Because these acquisition and merger are profitable and do reflect the progression of the organization.

    The example of Atlas is a case in reference here where Atlas used to be manufacturing motor bikes in 1960. Then began the journey of technology adoption, change of the existing mindset and competitiveness among the existing people. The organizational felt that same bunch of employees will not be able to keep the pace and new talent has to be brought in order to keep up the pace with the developing technology and competitiveness. The leader in this scenario needs tp keep all his employees motivated and has to keep focus on three R’s i.e. Respect, Reward & Recognition. The same principle followed at Atlas is the key to the success of the organization and its leaders.

    Another perspective that Mr. Abbas shared it is not necessary for a leader to be having an high EQ. A higher EQ. A person with high EQ may result in taking non-rationale decisions where as a Leader has to be low on EQ in order to make rationale decisions rather then emotional decisions. Because he is responsible 100% of all the things that either go right or wrong.

    Another noteworthy point that Mr. Abbas mentioned was one should be humble and should have humility in him and should not be arrogant. Decisions need to be thought completely and should not be taken on the basis of arrogance. One should not be arrogant about the fact that he has studied from LUMS or any highly rated institute. Because the institute teaches you concepts and there application is totally based on how you apply and what do you apply. Decisions based on arrogance can backfire at times or may not lead to desired results. Experience, education and its application will lead the way for a Leader. There is no substitute to experience. Creating buy-in and building alliance of people is the key to success.

    Leaders are not self appointed they are leaders by birth. If you have the element of being a leader then you will aspire to be one. The most important factor of leader is that they think selflessly. He doesn’t care about their preferences rather they keep the needs of everyone in mind. People who follow leaders come from different background, school of thoughts therefore; leaders cannot impose their thoughts in others. he also said that leadership is not a science, it cannot be taught rather leader is there in a person. He further told us that transformations in organizations are very painful. The person who is responsible for the change is not popular among people but transformations are important if the profits of your company is declining or technology is changing. Leader also has to be tough at times. If an emotional quotient is high in a person then he cannot become a leader because such leaders cannot cope up with the stress therefore they wont be able to do anything for the people they will be stucked in their own problems. Leaders are the one who take 100% responsibility of everything. Followers take the problem to the leaders and they find the missing piece of the puzzle and solve the query. The more experienced or skilled you are the more you will be able to solve the problem. For leaders humility is very important, the more humble you are the more successful leader you will become. The examples that he quoted was of HBL that HBL has transformational leader. He said he has come across many leaders but its not necessary that leader is the one who is famous, get his photo published in the newspaper rather there are leaders who stay quiet and do their work of inspiring and motivating others. Leaders are going to stay with their followers in the battle zone rather than staying back so leader is the one who has skills to fight with the followers in the warzone and protect his followers.

Mr. Abbas has working experience of 25 years and has worked in diversified businesses and environments. He says that Leaders are chosen, not self-appointed. Once you look inside you, you’ll realize that there is an instinct to be at the top and enjoy being the leader. A person who is a leader has to think very selflessly. Leadership cannot work in isolation. According to Mr. Abbas leadership is an art, not science. Transformation is always very difficult and painful no matter where it is.
    Mr. Abbas also highlighted during his talk that profitability is the prime goal for every business and whenever there is a problem in achieving it, there forms a need for transformation and all these transformations does not necessarily lead to success. It puts you under a lot of stress, work stress, emotional stress. Some it also requires unpopular and difficult decision making.
    Leadership involves the philosophy of taking people along and includes rapid changes and innovations. It also involves bringing entirely new set of people, leading by example, ethics, motivation and being closely linked with the company.
    He also specified the importance of the 3 R’s: Respect, Reward and Recognition. Leaders have to be very tough at times. Those who have a high EQ shouldn’t become leaders, because they cannot cope up with the emotional stress they are facing of their own. Leaders take 100% responsibility of everything. If there is a problem, he should be able to solve it. It is a very big challenge to be a leader. The more skilled and experienced you are as a leader, the more capable you are to solve these problems.
    Mr. Abbas also stressed the importance of being humble and said that when you start thinking very high of yourself that’s when you should change your mindset. He said that you should have humility in whatever you do. He also said that 99% who don’t show humility and exercise their power in a wrong way normally backfires against them. He also said that the day you have the common sense to deal with all these things, you’ll be successful. It’s also important for leaders to solve any problems and that only comes through experience. Another important aspect of being a leader is to ensure that he brings everyone together and creates an environment which is healthy so that everyone follows one common goal.
    It’s also important for leaders to give their followers a certain extent of freedom and also take them towards a common vision. Transformational leaders would frame the vision in the next 3 years with his think tank.

    He started his session by asking few questions from the class :
    * What are aspects of a good leader ?
    * What would be your drive to become a good leader?

    As with most popular sayings, there is some truth in the adage, “Great leaders are made, not born.” To some extent, the capacity for great leadership is innate. However, learning how to be a more effective leader is within everyone’s grasp – whether you lead multiple teams, an entire company or just one staff member.
    Leaders are not self-appointed but they are chosen through personality, vision and a thought process. A leader has to think selfless and what are other preference, a leader cannot work in an isolation, it has to be through a system and structure and a vision that leads to model, and not all transformational leads to a great success ,few transformations are the disaster also. Then Mr Abbas spoke about the 3 R’s, respect, reward and retention. Every person in an organisation needs to be respected They have to act as a role model, as an inspiration and they have to
    Show this to their followers that their voices are recognised in an organisation. Mr.Abbas further more elaborate that a leader shouldn’t have a high emotional intelligence i.e. A high EQ. The more skilled and experienced you are will lead more properly and lastly a leader should emphasise on humility.
