Interestingly people interchangeably used competence and competency, but there is difference between these terms. HR professional specially those involve in performance management distinguish well. Here are the some differences:

Competence:

1. It is about the ability to perform a job.
2. It describes  what has to be done to preform a job.
3. It is about the aptitude.
4. It is about the IQ
5. It is about the knowledge, skills and experience required to perform any job.
6. The plural is competences

Competency:

1. It is often known as behavioral competencies.
2. It describes how people behave to get job done effectively.
3. It is about the attitude.
4. It is about the EQ.
5. It is about the underlying feelings, emotions, behavior to perform a job effectively.
6. The plural is competencies
